The Challenge

Dioma was an almost-ready language learning platform when I joined. The product had been designed, but it wasn't yet in a state that could be handed off cleanly to engineering — and there was no structured design system to support future growth.

The project was in a critical phase: delivery needed to be perfect. Any inconsistency, missing state, or unclear spec would create friction for developers and slow down the launch. At the same time, the client needed a foundation that would let them scale the product without depending on the design team for every new screen.

My Individual Impact

1. Delivery Finalization — Making the Handoff Flawless

My first priority was to take the existing work and make it developer-ready. That meant auditing every screen, filling in missing states, standardizing spacing and typography, and ensuring every component was documented clearly enough for engineering to implement without guesswork.

I worked closely with the client to understand their technical constraints and prepared all deliverables in the format the development team needed — organized, annotated, and ready for implementation.

Impact: Delivered a clean, complete handoff package that reduced developer questions and prevented design debt before launch.

2. Flexible Design System — Built for Client Independence

I designed and built a flexible design system from the existing product. The goal wasn't just consistency — it was enablement. The system needed to be robust enough that the client's team could create new screens on their own, without needing design support for every change.

I structured components, tokens, and patterns so they were intuitive to use, well-documented, and flexible enough to accommodate future features without breaking the system's logic.

Impact: The client reported that the design system was "very robust" and that they were able to create new screens independently using just the system — without design involvement. This shifted the design team from a bottleneck to an enabler.

3. Client Communication & Design Leadership

Throughout the engagement, I was the primary point of contact for the client. I led design reviews, presented the design system structure, gathered feedback, and aligned stakeholders on the final delivery approach. I made sure the client understood not just what the system contained, but how to use it to move faster.

Impact: Built client trust through clear communication and a system designed for their long-term independence.

Client Feedback

"The system is very robust — we were able to create new screens independently using just it."

What I'd Do Differently

The system was built from an existing product, which meant some early decisions were inherited rather than designed from scratch. With more runway, I would have audited the component architecture earlier to identify structural issues before they were baked into the system.
